Eversholt Rail is delighted to announce that they have donated a Class 91 locomotive to the Scottish Railway Preservation Society for display at the Museum of Scottish Railways.
Locomotive 91131 was the last of the Class 91 locomotives to be built at Crewe works in 1991. It holds the fastest passenger speed record in the UK having recorded a speed of 154.1mph on Stoke Bank on 2 June 1995. 91131 was in operation on the East Coast Mainline from 1991 until it was withdrawn from service in 2020. The hydrogen train project is part of a programme to decarbonise Scotlands railway transportation. It is being implemented in five phases, namely concept design, technical proofing, operational proofing on national network, pilot service operations, and deployment. The concept design phase was completed in 2020 while deployment is planned for between 2026 and 2027.

Supporters are calling for a clean fuel strategy but critics are not sure about hydrogen's role.
'There's no doubting that diesel is messy', says Dougie Choppen, who has been working on the railway for about 45 years. He is now part of a small but dedicated team at a site in Bo'ness halfway through building Scotland's first train powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, which will emit nothing more than steam and condensed water. At the Bo'ness home of Scotlands railway heritage they are hosting a project aimed at transforming the future of the rail industry.
A retired ScotRail Class 314 electric set was transported by road from its depot in Glasgow to the Boness & Kinneil Railway where it will be converted to hydrogen-powered - a cleaner, greener alternative to diesel for non-electrified routes. The work is part of a Scottish Enterprise project, in partnership with Transport Scotland and the University of St Andrews Hydrogen Accelerator, to bring skills for the future of the rail industry into the Scottish supply chain and create opportunities for businesses based here.
